Welcome to the Arapahoe County ARAPAHOE ROAD Corridor Study - I-25 to Parker Road Website
Draft Vision Statement
Project Area Background

Project Purpose

The purpose of the Arapahoe Road Corridor Study was to identify and evaluate various alternatives to address access and mobility within the corridor, and to recommend the most appropriate set of actions that best addresses local and regional travel needs well into the future.

Vision Statement

Over the next 20 years and beyond, Arapahoe Road between I-25 and Parker Road will serve as a highly effective arterial corridor that meets the needs of commuters, employers, residents and the communities it serves. Arapahoe Road will provide a balance of improved regional mobility, local accessibility, and enhanced safety, with minimal impact on neighborhoods and the environment.

Project objectives to achieve this vision include:

  • Collaborating with local jurisdictions and the public to find creative solutions that will consider current transportation plans, comprehensive land use and economic plans.
  • Providing roadway and intersection improvements that maintain safe and reliable travel through and within the Arapahoe Road corridor, including improvements on other nearby corridors that could accommodate a portion of regional traffic.
  • Expanding mobility opportunities, including transit, bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  • Accommodating or supporting previous transportation and infrastructure improvements
  • Enhancing the corridor image, design character and identity of places within the project corridor
  • Avoiding or minimizing community or environmental impacts resulting from the recommended improvements

Steps for conducting the Arapahoe Road Transportation Study to help achieve the vision for the corridor include:

  • Identify roadway and intersection improvements to maintain safe and reliable travel through and within the Arapahoe Road corridor, including improvements on other study area corridors that could accommodate a portion of regional traffic.
  • Define an appropriate level of future transit services, bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure
  • Reflect Context Sensitive Design in development of improvement options
  • Maintain consistency with the CDOT Access Code Classification while providing reasonable access to businesses adjacent to the corridor
  • Assess economic viability of the corridor and potential benefits and impacts from transportation improvements
  • Determine cost allocation and funding sources for recommended improvements
  • Identify phasing opportunities for timely implementation
  • Define right of way needs to aid in local planning efforts
  • Maintain a high level of communication with the public, corridor agencies and regulatory and planning agencies
  • Recognize and address methods to streamline subsequent NEPA documentation and clearance

Project Area Background

Continued growth and development in the southeast Denver metropolitan area is causing an increasing need to address east-west mobility between Parker Road and I-25. In the immediate vicinity of the Arapahoe Road corridor, a substantial portion of land is developed with various commercial and residential uses. Additional commercial and residential development is expected on the remaining undeveloped property along Arapahoe Road.

Between Parker Road and I-25, Arapahoe Road is mostly a six-lane principal arterial and is one of four principal roadway crossings of Cherry Creek north of E-470 (I-225, Dam Road, Broncos Parkway and Arapahoe Road). Arapahoe Road is only a four-lane roadway through the I-25 interchange, resulting in constrained traffic operations in the vicinity of the interchange. The TREX project along the I-25 mainline includes minor ramp construction at Arapahoe Road, but does not address constraints at I-25/Arapahoe Road. The Southeast light rail line will extend along I-25 and creates an additional physical constraint for future improvements of the I-25/Arapahoe Road interchange.

The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) identifies Arapahoe Road as a major regional arterial in the 2030 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). Jurisdictions including Greenwood Village and Centennial have developed, or are in the process of developing, comprehensive plans and transportation plans to address mobility and access needs along the corridor.
